The discipline of Chemistry addresses critical challenges in society.  Today, these challenges include developing new energy sources, understanding the chemistry of living systems and biologically important molecules, solving local and global environmental problems, utilizing and processing vast amounts of genetic information, synthesizing novel compounds in drug design and for new materials, and understanding matter on the nanometer scale.  Our students will be prepared to spend their careers working on these very issues in academic research, applied or industrial research and engineering, medicine and the health professions, education and outreach. To develop student talent in order to make a difference in these areas, the Chemistry Department provides students with a superb, comprehensive education of the principles of chemistry, including a rich laboratory experience within the curriculum.
